Woman Invents Gas Mask Bra, Men’s Lives Will Be Saved

gas-mask-bra-425tp100209You just have to love women’s ingenuity.

Dr. Elena Bodnar began her science career by studying the effects of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. Thinking that thousands of lives and illnesses could have been spared had victims had instant access to gas masks to protect themselves, Dr. Bodnar came up with a brilliant idea: The Gas Mask Bra. It converts into a pair of gas masks – one for the wearer, the other for a friend.

If you are laughing, you might consider that these could have been useful during the 911 attacks and during various other disasters involving chemical fumes and debris. Dr. Bodnar’s invention seems quite practical to me. Most women are wearing bras when they are out in public so they would never be without…um…coverage. And she points out that no matter what size you wear, a bra’s cup is the perfect size and shape to cover the mouth and nose.  And it’s useful to note that the bra samples Dr. Bodnar had on display were very tasteful and actually kind of cute.

So if tragedy should strike, would you be wearing your own bra or borrowing from a friend?  Or perhaps this technology will be adapted by all the bra manufacturers and in the future it will be the women’s job to save the world by sharing half their bra with the men.  I think women currently outnumber men so there should be enough to go around. ;)

Yeah it’s always the inventions that seem the silliest that turn out to be the best ones!

  • I think it’s a great idea! How many people actually have gas masks in their home? I know I certainly don’t. But what would happen should I suddenly need one, like in the event of a fire? It’s not like I can just run out to the store and get one. Having one in my underwear drawer would certainly be helpful.
And in an event like 9/11 you probably would first be thinking about life support rather than breast support. As long as the bra is comfortable and provides enough support, I don’t see why it can’t fill a second function as well.
I’m getting one as soon as they’re out on the market! :)

Hmmm…hadn’t thought about that. It would certainly make tv coverage of the next disaster a little more interesting now, wouldn’t it? All those folks running around with half a bra strapped to their heads. Would they have to use the blackout effect to cover up the THO? And what happens if it’s raining that day and you’re wearing a white shirt? ;)

I don’t know about anybody else, but I NEED my bra to do its primary job–my girls need the support! I don’t think I could spare it to use as a gas mask. Maybe I will meet an attractive paramedic when I pass out.
