Help Girls Shatter The Glass in Jazz

Saxophone Player DesignShatter The Glass is our featured charity for the month of May 2009.  Founded by saxophonist and composer Sarah Manning, Shatter the Glass has a mission to encourage women and girls to participate in the male-dominated jazz industry by providing a strong role model of a woman-led group.  Through a transparent look at a working band, performances in non-traditional venues and mentoring of women and girls, they aim to bring the music to a wider demographic.  Mentoring work includes the opportunity for female instrumentalists such as emerging pianist/keyboardist Efacho Okeke to attend private sound checks and hang out with the band, the chance to meet privately with Sarah to discuss career options, and open rehearsals.

As a musician, I am excited to see an ensemble that encourages women to develop their talents in such a tough field.  For the entire month of May, Girls Can’t WHAT? will be donating 20% of all profits to Shatter the Glass to continue paving the way for young female musicians break into this genre and grow their skills to bring us fresh, vibrant music.

I’m also a girl that plays the alto sax. At my school we have sitting, and I’ve been first chair for 2 going on three years straight. In the past school year there were only three girls left playing the sax, and a once flute player switched insturments to the tenor sax. And everyone knows I am the best out of the sax players, except the director of course.
