Girls can’t play baseball!?!

When I was younger, I wanted to play baseball, you know, with the guys. My mom said that she wanted me to play softball instead, becuase there were girls on the team. I wanted to play with the guys for a few reason which I will list below:

  1. The softball gear was too big for me, at least in the league that i was in.
  2. I wanted to play with the guys, I had been playing baseball since as long as I can remember. I wanted to make friends with the boys.
  3. I wanted to prove to my family and the team that I could play with the guys.

My mom made me play softball instead, but I didn’t end up playing because I was sick with mono for like half the year. Anyway, I started reseraching the MLB and NFL. ( I love playing football too, and might play on my middle school team if I can.) and it turns out that girls can’t play!!! I was pissed. I mean Guys should be able to play pro softball if they want to, and girls should be able baseball if they want to.

And football, well girls shouldn’t have to play on a stupid powderpuff league if they want to play football. They should be able to play with the big boys. I mean, if they’re good enough, what’s the problem? If girls want to, and are good enough, they should be able to. End of story.

Thnx guys – this probably won’t matter in the end, but I just wanted to say something. :)

Mostly our moms and dads don’t let us play baseball with boys because we’re girls we got boobs and other things the boys cannot have in the body.My mom said the same as your mother to play softball instead of baseball. Well im dominican and i hav that gift of playing baseball. One thing thats not fair GUYS can play SOFTBALL but WE CAN’T PLAY BASEBALL THAT IS VERY UNFAIR!!!

  • Thank you so much for your support! I hate how sports are so sexist anymore. i thought this was the 21st century! I thought we were supposed to be treated the same as men, but this is just one example of how this is not true.

Great description Raquel! I also preferred the feel and power of a baseball. I never even had a chance to play softball as a kid. Little Leage baseball was my only option so I grew up playing baseball instead and I would still much rather toss around a baseball than a softball any day!

  • Thanks for your comments Megan. I remember wanting to play baseball when I was a girl because a baseball was much more comfortable for me to pitch, throw, and catch. A softball felt so clunky in my hands.

I loved how fast the baseball flew with my power behind it. But there were no baseball leagues for girls, and we couldn’t play with the boys. I don’t think I really processed how upset I was at the time that my choice was limited to softball. Maybe when more girls say something, like you have, changes will start happening. It all starts with one brave person.

Megan – it does matter in the end. And I think we are starting to see a shift in how many girls are interested in football and baseball. We are starting to push more and more for equality in sports.

Yes – there should be girls football leagues and you may have noticed that they are starting to pop up all over the place. Google “womens football leagues” and you will find them across the country. They aren’t powder puff leagues either. ;)
