Before I debut these new roller derby gifts for girls, I just want to point out that I’ve been contemplating creating a roller derby design ever since I saw the movie “Whip It”! If you haven’t seen that movie, I highly recommend it.
I love to roller skate although I admit I’m only average at it. I can skate pretty fast and I’m somewhat of a daredevil, but I can’t skate backwards to save my life and whenever my local skating rink played games like “shoot the duck,” I made an excuse to hit the snack bar.
Roller Derby was not a sport I even knew about until maybe high school and I probably have MTV or some cable channel to thank for the enlightenment. The movie “Whip It” probably taught me more about the sport than I had previously gathered from the tube.
It seems here recently that Roller Derby has been resurrected as a popular sport for women and my local skating rink has a team, complete with uniforms, logos and other gear sporting the Soy City Rollers name.
Being a drummer, I’m not interested in tempting the bone breaking fairies by joining a Roller Derby team. But if I could join, I think I’d like to be a jammer. That just looks like a fun position. So since I won’t be join a team, I figure the next best thing is to create some awesome looking roller derby gifts that can be customized for any team.
