Do Your Athletic Shorts Cause Frontal Wedgies?

volleyball shortsNo, I promise this isn’t another post about Hooters.  This is about athletic uniforms.

Last night I attended my daughter’s first volleyball game of the season.  The opposing team was wearing a uniform similar to that in the photo to the right. The shorts are very snug and they are designed that way I suppose for multiple reasons.

  • Modesty – less likely to be showing off your undies when you dive for the ball
  • Performance – might gain .oooo5 seconds of speed without the extra material flapping in the breeze
  • Safety – won’t be able to snag your britches when you get tangled up with your teammate or catch them on the bleachers while retrieving the ball

My complaint isn’t at all with how they look or how they perform.  What I saw last night was a team that spent more time pulling their shorts down than actually playing a volleyball game.  After every single play, at least 2/3 of the team would reach down and adjust their skin-tight shorts that would ride up into their crotch the second they exerted any sort of leg movement – like a frontal wedgie.  If I were the coach, I’d think seriously about getting uniforms that don’t interfere with my athletes concentration on the game.

Maybe they were a bad fit or maybe the style was wrong for some body shapes.  Regardless, I have a feeling a few of those ladies were a bit embarrassed at having to “adjust themselves” in the middle of the gym in front of a crowd of people after every play.  Anyone else notice this?

Now I don’t know if shorts like these are mandated in professional volleyball, but it’s obviously not a requirement where I live.  My daughter’s team wears standard shorts – not short-shorts – just regular every day gym shorts.  Slightly loose-fitting and comfortable.  No one on my daughter’s team was obsessing over how their uniform fit.  Maybe that’s why we won.

What do you think?

  • Well this is what volleyball players attire is!! When teams aren’t good or are in middle school it ni biggie. But in competitive, AAU, or high school ball spandex it agar you wear. Ive been playing since I was 10. If you wear underwear when you play you don’t get cameltoes but if you don’t…expect to have them. After awhile you will get numb to how short and tight they are and enjoy the game. Hope I helped!(:

Actually I would complain about the look. For kids of that age they are showing too much. I am not looking forward to the day when I have to watch my own daughter play in them.

I can’t imagine that they would be to comfortable having to pull them out of god knows where.

If there was some competetive advantage, maybe I would buy into an argument for them, but I don’t see any advantages at all.

I’m not terribly impressed by the “look” of them either, Rob. I just can’t imagine wearing clothes that are that uncomfortable and trying to do athletics on top of it. That cannot be productive.
