Singing Bee Gets Thumbs Down

The new tv show the “Singing Bee” gets a big thumbs down from me. The concept was great and I had fun singing along (I could’ve won), but what was with the choices of songs and the dancers? In my opinion, the “Singing Bee” is being touted as a family show, since it follows “America’s Got Talent” which is pretty decent (although I take issue with some of the “acts” they allow) and the fact that it is being put in the “family” time slot.

The show started out fun and amusing and then suddenly a group of scantily clad women jumped up on stage and started dancing as the show broke for the first commercial. :o I was appalled. My sister called (and she doesn’t call for no reason) to ask if I was watching it and to tell me she was disgusted by the dancing. What was the purpose? They could just as well have used that 10-15 seconds to pan the audience and show people dancing, singing and having a good time just like they did when the show opened. Pointless. I guess the producers didn’t have enough faith that their concept could float on it’s own so they threw in the “sex factor” to get attention. :-& No thanks.

On top of that, the song choices could’ve been a little more appropriate for younger audiences. Lines like “looking for tush” were stuck in there for shock value, I suppose. Ridiculous. There are a lot of good songs out there that don’t involve references to sex or use foul language (you watch – they will throw that in eventually).

Boo, NBC. Big, fat BOO. We are not impressed. [-(

One of those dancers in literally THE best dancer on Broadway – Holly Cruikshank. I kid you not, she is simply a stellar dancer from the Musicals “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum,” “Chicago,” “Fosse,” “Contact” (she was the star) and “Movin’ Out” (she was the star of that musical too) and it is amazing casting on NBC’s part, but they could use a better choreographer cuz I kid you not, that girl is really one of the most talent dancer Broadway has seen. No joke.

Yeah – I noticed that too. Joey should have used the name on the guy’s name tag. It’s just common courtesy. Some folks don’t like it when you screw with their name. I, personally, don’t like to be called “Gretch” by anyone other than close friends and family. I don’t know why – I just don’t like it.

I think the show will die off, too, unless they can be a little more creative with it and keep people interested. Perhaps integrate some viewer participation with cell phones or the Internet to let people play along for prizes.

They need to can the dancers and clean it up a bit first, though, or I won’t be watching it and neither will a lot of other “family-friendly” minded people. :-w

  • Fatone did a decent job of hosting, in my opinion, but I bet Gus was getting pissed that he was referred to as “Gussy” 752 times, lol. I predict it’ll air for a few more weeks then die off.

  • I caught the end of this program last night, too, and I was shocked when I saw these women up there dancing…and I thought, “For WHAT?”

Honestly, I was kind of laughing at the whole concept…$50K for singing a bunch of lyrics very, VERY poorly? Whatever. It’s a way of getting the beer drinking karaoke do-nothings of the world to actually win something for once, I suppose, besides a “worst toupee” contest.
