What is a Feminist?

Posted by: gretchen on Tuesday, February 12th, 2008 in Inspiration | 3 Comments

Being that it’s nearly Wednesday, I’m a little late to the game with the weekly challenge, inspired from this quote:

“I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is; I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute.” ~ Dame Rebecca West

So what do you think? How would you describe a feminist?

Feminism calls for equality between genders through a social, economic, and political aspect. Our “Founding Fathers” weren’t called “manists”, right? For some reason, there’s a negative connotation when people refer to feminism, and I don’t understand why. Our Constitution called for equality among men. As feminists, we’re merely cleaning up the social mess that Thomas Jefferson left behind!
