Why there are no ads on this site

I get requests almost daily from organizations and marketing companies that want me to place ads around my site so I thought I’d give a little explanation as to why I will not post ads on here.   First of all, let me say that I tried a few ads on my site about a year ago.   The ads were distracting and didn’t always fit the “look” of my site.   Sure, I can make them blend in and look pretty but I can’t control the content or images that pop up.   And if I can’t control it, then I don’t want it on here.   Imagine the shock of opening up a page on my site about modesty, only to find an ad image of a scantily clad girl inviting us to visit a web site for a “dating” service.   Not cool.   The text-based ads were just as bad.   I had complaints from users about some of the text that was showing up and the products that were being advertised based off of keywords in an article.   Again, not cool.   So I pulled them ALL off.

This does not mean that every advertisement is bad.   There were some good ones along with with the bad ones.   Some organizations that want to advertise with me are actually very reputable or they are non-profits just wanting to trade links with me.   My policy on those types of ads is this:  Sign up for an account here, sign in and post a short write-up for your organization.   If you want more, come back and give us an update, tell us what your organization is doing to benefit women or what events you are hosting.   I’m ok with that kind of promotion as long as it fits the theme of this site, which is to encourage women.

What about the money I can get from ads?  Simply put, I don’t need the money.   The revenue from my own shop is more than enough to sustain this site and all the expenses that go with it.   Carry on.

BlogDay 2007

Today is the third annual BlogDay 2007 which I didn’t even know about until last night when reader KayKayZowie emailed me to say that she was linking to Girls Can’t WHAT? as one of her favorite blogs.

What is BlogDay, you ask?

BlogDay was created with the belief that bloggers should have one day dedicated to getting to know other bloggers from other countries and areas of interest. On that day Bloggers will recommend other blogs to their blog visitors.

I can’t pass up this opportunity to give some shout-outs to five of my favorite blogs:

  • SoapboxFive - My best friend Kelli’s blog, which highlights social issues.
  • Lifehacker - This is sort of a hodgepodge block from many authors that offer cool tips and tricks about all kinds of stuff relevant to our daily lives.
  • Kelly Forrester - If you’re into GTD (if you have no idea what GTD even stands for, then you most definitely aren’t), Kelly has lots of insights about personal productivity.
  • OpenSourceCommunity.org - being a total geek, I love this community blog which covers all things open source
  • Bittbox - I just found this one last week and it’s full of fantastic photoshop and illustrator tutorials. I don’t even know the author’s name, but it’s a great resource.

Belated Birthday Contest Begins

I wanted to kick off a new contest last month to help celebrate Girls Can’t WHAT? turning two, but my life has been so crazy that I just didn’t get it squeezed in. Girls Can’t WHAT? Turns 2

It was two years ago this week that I came up with the concept for Girls Can’t WHAT? in the middle of the night. I decided to treat myself to an early anniversary gift, so I redesigned the site from scratch, combining several ideas I have been wanting to implement for a long time. The design is now up, but there are a few glitches I am still hammering out. For starters, the forums are down. :( There is a conflict in the code and I will have to hack a few plugins to make it work, but I’ll get to that soon. I have tested in every browser I have access to, but I’m sure there will be an occasional anomaly, so please let me know.

I will post more later, but right now it is 2:17am and I am toast… @-)
