Robyn Was Discouraged From Taking Computer Science Classes

Submitted By: Robyn | Age: 28

In grade 10/11 I was the only girl in our school’s computer science class. Our final project was to make an application (I made a game).  During one of the classes, the teacher (also a woman) said that I should design the manuals for everyone, because ‘girls have a better sense of colour’. She would also start each class with ‘good morning gentlemen… and Robyn’. It was very discouraging. I ended up not taking the last year of the course.

Despite this bad teacher, I am now a game industry professional, QA lead and producer. :)

Robyn – I know people like this. Unfortunately they have been treated the same way at some point in their life and the only thing they know to do is to pass on their disillusions to others. I’m glad you can see beyond that.
