Post Office Now Approves of Women Working

Yesterday I posted that The US Post Office Doesn’t Approve of Women Working.  Confused by their rejection of my design on a postage stamp, I decided to submit two more variations to see what the real problem was.  See if you can make sense of the results…

Here is the original image rejected by the Post Office:

Girls Can't WHAT? Women Working Sign

This submission was a test to see if they were disallowing the actual road sign (it got approved):

Men Working Sign

This design, which has the same meaning as the original, was also approved.  Go figure.

Women Working Construction Sign

So what’s the deal? Why do you think the original got the thumbs down? Perhaps they thought we were calling the men “women” and that was insulting? Who knows.

Anyway, both variations are available in the Girls Can’t WHAT? Gift Shop.  Get your postage now before the post office changes their mind.

First off, I’m glad it got approved! I love the idea! It’s always frustrating seeing “men working” when there are clearly women there. My only thought that the original is because you crossed out Men. It could be viewed as an anti-men thing and they don’t want to discriminate against men (or anything). Since you aren’t crossing anything out in the new design, they approved it – you are advocating for something (women) without discriminating against something else for the purpose (men). Hope that makes sense. Can’t wait to get mine! Thanks!

I figure it was either viewed as an anti-men gesture or that it was insulting the men by calling them women. Who knows?

Hmm…a further test might be to resubmit the original design with “people” instead of “women”. That would rule out the possibility of them thinking it was trying to insult the men, at least.
