Well I just did a burn house training last month and it was AWESOME!!!! But I feel so good about myself and it really feels good when my 7 years old son goes to school and tells everybody that his mom is a fire fighter.

I am extremely nervous about the CPAT and have been training in order to get in shape.. do any of you other female firefighters have any tips to get me where I need to be to succeed.. I also have many people said I CAN’T but I KNOW I can if I keep focused! Please help!

Thanks for sharing that Becky. Feel free to post in the “your story” section if you’d like. :)

  • I am also a female firefighter. One of three on our department. I was not the first female firefighter on our department, but I am the first to be approved in driving & operating our pumper. I can relate to what you are saying. It is harder for a female. The guys can make mistakes all day long, but the fist time I make one…its “because I’m a girl”. I disagree, its because Im human, just like guys. I can, have and will make more mistakes, but most important thing is, I will learn from them. Most of the guys on our department are a great bunch of guys..they are usually not the ones to criticize, its usually the general public. But the again, they expect a volunteer fire department to be experts…its not going to happen. Hey, Two thumbs up for you for being a female firefighter. I’m 40 years old, I wish I could have started at your age, so you keep up the good work.

  • I’m 24 years old and just completed the first part of my training for being a Firefighter. I am the only female on my department and I am the only female in my classes. I encourage any female that wants to be a firefighter to go out and do it. There are a lot of people out there that think that females can’t do what they consider and mans job. But me and a lot of other women out there have proven them wrong. I won’t lie it is a little harder on a female to get through the training because you have to prove to those guys that you can do it as good as them and sometimes better. I had a guy that has been in the fire service for along time and has had three females on his department tell me that I was wasting my time and everyone else’s time because I wasn’t going to pass. When he told me that it made me mad and made me try even harder. The first time I seen him on a fire scene he shook his hand and dropped his head down and walked away because he was wrong. I’m proud to be a female firefighter and hope that there will be many more on departments around the world. One last thing I am the first female to ever be on my department. So if there has never been a female on your local department be the first one. I wish everyone luck in the future.
