Never getting a chance?

I’m an 18 year old girl growing up in southern Minnesota. So far I’ve been told that because I’m a girl I can’t fix my car, skin a deer, ride a bull, throw a decent punch or anything else.

Actually, boys have told me I can’t play football with them because I’m a girl. I’m trying hard but how am I supposed to prove that I can do anything they can, maybe even better if I never get a chance?

Just recently I went to a paintball field and I was the ONLY girl there when some boy had the nerve to come up and say “Don’t worry, Babe. They won’t aim for a girl.” I was utterly insulted, the worst part is that he was right!

No one shot at me until I was the last one shooting at them! What am I supposed to do to prove myself? I love mudding and doing fun stuff. I’m not some doll to sit on the shelf. I wanna get out there. I can skin a deer faster than any boy I know and my tackle can take down a 200 pound guy. Yes I’m 5 foot 3. Yes I’m 121 pounds and yes I’m a girl. That doesn’t mean I can’t play with the boys.

Raisa – you are not alone. Lots of girls experience exactly what you just described. The best advice I have to offer is just to get in there and do your best. Don’t ever be a showoff, but at the same time don’t be afraid to take opportunities that demonstrate your skills. The guys will eventually catch on. And if they’re smart, they’ll realize what an asset you can be to the team.
