Donating 20% of GCW Sales to Women’s Charities, Suggestions?

Since I’ve been restructuring my site, I’ve decided a “Grand Opening” is in order.  I’m already working with a PR firm to get the word out and I’m brainstorming announcement ideas and cleaning up the shop this week in preparation.  However, there is still one missing piece.  When I first started Girls Can’t WHAT? I envisioned being able to take some of the profit and invest it back into the lives of other women.  I’ve donated to random charities along the way, but not consistently.  Now that GCW is up and running on it’s own and all my bills are paid, I think it’s time to put something a little more structured in place.

I’ve written before that one of my life’s goals is to give away one million dollars.  I’ve already started that goal, but I have a LONG way to go.  That’s a lot of cash!  So beginning May 1 (that’s tomorrow), I’m going to start giving 20% of every sale to charity.  My problem is I don’t know which one to pick.  There are a lot of really good womens organizations out there.  I may just select a handful and rotate them monthly or divide the monies up at the end of the year among them (since sales are seasonal this makes more sense).  So I’m asking you all for suggestions.  Post your favorites in the comments and I will do some investigating.  ;)

J-Bell – thanks for the suggestions. Yes, this post is old but I’m always looking for great charities. I will check these out!

  • Oh,I just realized what year this was posted….oops!almost five years ago!well,I hope you are still taking suggestions, because the organizations I suggested are awesome!

  • I have 2 suggestions:
Beauty Redefined is an awesome feminist organization, showing females everywhere that there is more to a woman than just being beautiful. It also reveals the evil behind sexist corporations, like how they use photoshop.
My next suggestion is called Girls Inc.,which I actually participated in.It teaches and prepares young girls about economy/finance,sex education, and feminism. It’s classes also form great friendships among the students!
Both organizations are amazing, and I suggest you support them!

Very cool! I’m adding that to my list. :D

  • Mama Cash is the oldest international women’s fund – established in the Netherlands in 1983. She supports pioneering and innovative women’s initiatives around the world, because she believes that social change starts with women and girls.

Since 1983 Mama Cash has subsidized more than 6.000 women’s projects and has invested more than 30 million euros. She is active in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Thanks! I’m making a list because I have to contact each group and get approval first. Sounds crazy to ask permission to give them money, but in some states and within some groups there is paperwork to be filed before it can happen (because I am promoting it on a web site) so I’m trying to cover all my bases. I already have 3 organizations confirmed. :D
