What took so long?

The Marines require special licensing and I have been waiting until one of my vendors made that licensing available to me. That day has arrived and I am pleased to announce the new Girls Can’t WHAT? Marines design.

I’ve added six design variations to start with and if you’d like something different, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do (the Marines have some very tight restrictions on what we can and cannot use in the image).

In the last few years, we’ve seen a steady rise in the number of girls playing football at the middle and high school levels.  Many of them have been accepted as the outstanding athletes that they are, while others have had to fight to uphold their Title IX right to participate in the game they love.

With the demand for football designs so high (I get frequent requests for color changes and uniform colors), I decided to add one more design to the mix.  The new design is a very simple image of a football with the sassy Girls Can’t WHAT? logo above it (see photo on the right).

As I was working on it yesterday, I started thinking about the upcoming Super Bowl game on Sunday and I can’t help but wonder if someday we will see women playing in the Super Bowl.  Now I know I’m opening a HUGE can of worms by even suggesting that, but we’ve come a long way and the women’s football leagues today are not lacking in capable athletes up for the challenge.  So what do you think?  Will it ever happen?  Post your comments below…

If you’re in doubt, check out this YouTube clip of  Women’s Weightlifting at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.  You’ve gotta watch the entire video – it’s just fascinating.

It’s also a good lesson to see that the winner wasn’t the biggest, the strongest or the crowd favorite.  The gold medal winner had the smallest body size and also set a new world record in the process of winning the gold.

This bodybuilder design was one of the top requested designs this year and I’m pleased to be adding it to the shop this week. You can find this design in light and dark skin tones as well as a blonde version and a version of just the weights.

The new girls pole vault gifts are here, but I have to admit that pole vaulting is not a sport I am familiar with.  I don’t think our track team even participated in that event when I was in high school.  Maybe the boys did and I never noticed, but I am 100% positive that no girls competed in the pole vault where I lived.

So when my daughter’s teacher requested Girls Can’t WHAT? pole vault gifts, I had to stop and think if I had EVER seen womens pole vaulting.  I hit up YouTube, and sure enough there are tons of women pole vaulters.

Girls Can’t Play Basketball

When I was in the 6th grade, we did not have a girls basketball team. So I did the next best thing.  I tried out for the boys basketball team.

And I made it.

So did another girl in my class.

To say it was easy would be a lie.  It was kinda rough.  The boys tolerated us, but only because the coach really pushed them to be accepting.  We heard some put downs, got ignored and passed up for plays at times, but overall it was a pretty good experience.  It was jr. high – need I say more?

Today will be my daughter’s first basketball game.  She’s in the 8th grade and decide that this year she would try out for the girls team at school.  I’ve been working with her on lay-ups and free throws.  She’s a lefty and I’m ambidextrous so I’ve been helping her with right-hand moves.

I love to roller skate although I admit I’m only average at it. I can skate pretty fast and I’m somewhat of a daredevil, but I can’t skate backwards to save my life and whenever my local skating rink played games like “shoot the duck,” I made an excuse to hit the snack bar.

Roller Derby was not a sport I even knew about until maybe high school and I probably have MTV or some cable channel to thank for the enlightenment.  The movie “Whip It” probably taught me more about the sport than I had previously gathered from the tube.

It seems here recently that Roller Derby has been resurrected as a popular sport for women and my local skating rink has a team, complete with uniforms, logos and other gear sporting the Soy City Rollers name.

Being a drummer, I’m not interested in tempting the bone breaking fairies by joining a Roller Derby team. But if I could join, I think I’d like to be a jammer.  That just looks like a fun position. So since I won’t be join a team, I figure the next best thing is to create some awesome looking roller derby gifts that can be customized for any team.

Having grown up playing Little League baseball, softball is a little foreign to me but I’m learning the rules and techniques while watching my daughter play.

Softball is pretty popular in my area during the summer months. I would really love to join a team some year but I’m finding it difficult to find a womens softball team in my area.  What really blows my mind is that there don’t seem to be any co-ed teams around here either.  Maybe someday.

Some interesting facts about lifeguarding:

• Clara Barton, who heard about the International Red Cross movement while in Europe after the Civil war, founded the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1881.
• In 1937 the Red Cross text for lifesavers, Life Saving and Water safety, was published, replacing a booklet, Life Saving Methods. The new text “an authoritative source of knowledge and information,” had no pictures of women rescuers.
• Men are four times more likely to drown than women.

So what’s the deal? Why do you think the original got the thumbs down? Perhaps they thought we were calling the men “women” and that was insulting? Who knows.
