Girls Can’t Be Paramedics
Dictionary.com defines “Paramedic” as
a person who is trained to assist a physician or to give first aid or other health care in the absence of a physician, often as part of a police, rescue, or firefighting squad
Paramedics are often the first to arrive on the scene and their care and medical attention can be the most important during the critical moments after an accident or injury. I applaud all of the men and women who have undergone the intense mental, physical and emotional training to prepare themselves for those moments when we need them most.
The career of EMT is typically a male-dominated one, but we all know women are quite capable of handling this occupation with the same grace and skill as their male counterparts. So for all the women out there driving the ambulance, administering the medication or holding someone’s hand, this design is for you. It is now available in the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop on a variety of gifts and apparel.
Girls Can’t Play Trumpet
Musicians have been hot sellers at Girls Can’t WHAT? and my request list for musical instruments is ridiculously long. That tells me that girls are rocking the world from all genres with all kinds of sounds!
I’ve been quietly working to fill that gap by adding more Girls Can’t WHAT? instrumentalists to the shop. The latest is a trumpet player. Once again, I am drawing a blank on famous female trumpet players. If you can point me to a few, I would greatly appreciate it. YouTube videos would be even better since it would nice to be able to hear them as well. ![]()
You can find this design on an assortment of cool t-shirts and gift items in the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop. Here’s a sampling of items in both the light and dark skin tones. Read more
Girls Can’t Bowl
Bowling is one of my favorite sports. I have no idea why, but I enjoy it. In fact, I was in a bowling league when I was in jr. high and high school. We were an all-girls team and we went all the way to state one year. I think we placed like third or fourth, too.
Hey wait….I think I have a photo of my team… Yup. Found it. I’m on the far right. ![]()
So anyway, I decided a Girls Can’t WHAT? Bowling design was in order. I had no idea drawing a ball and a couple of bowling pins could be so difficult, but I think I spent way too much time on it. It turned out pretty cute according to my friends Kelli and Trina who gave me color advice for her hair and clothing. And the ball…which was originally black, then blue, then green and then we settled on orange.
Usually I mention a famous women the design may represent, but I can’t think of any pro women bowlers. How sad is that? Read more
Girls Can’t Ski
Yes, I realize it is nearly spring, but snow skiing sure sounds like fun right about now. I haven’t been skiing in several years, but I was pretty good in my prime. I have made it down a quite a few intermediate and at least two “expert” level hills when I was younger.
A Girls Can’t WHAT? fan I was chatting with the other day mentioned that she loves to ski and I instantly knew that would be my next design. I’m kicking myself for not making this one sooner as it is one of my favorite sports. In fact, I love to watch the winter Olympics just to see all the different skiing events, including alpine skiing, downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super G, and combined, freestyle skiing, cross country skiing, and nordic combined (ski jumping and cross country skiing).
My favorites have typically been downhill and freestyle and some of my favorite female skiers have been Petra Kronberger, Lindsey Kildow, Laurie Graham, Karen Percy, Kerrin Lee-Gartner, Josee Lacasse, Lucie Laroche, Michelle McKendry, Nancy Gee and Kellie Casey and Kristen Ulmer. I know I missed a few so I may be back to add more as I think of them.
Feel free to add your favorites in the comments below.
Girls Can’t Be Optometrists
Monday I had an appointment to get my eyes checked and it dawned on me that I didn’t have an optometrist design yet. I have the best eye doctor on the planet. Her name is Dr. Camda Temmen and she makes every visit enjoyable. In fact, my family likes her so much that when she moved to a new office several years ago on the other side of town, we opted to drive out of our way rather than change doctors.
My vision is not the greatest. When I was seven years old or so, I was stung by a bee in the corner of my left eye. Although there is no visible scarring, I have never had perfect vision in that eye and it is prone to dryness and eye strain problems which are common occurrences in my technical profession. No combination of contacts or prescription glasses have ever corrected that, but Dr. Temmen knows all about it and works with me whenever I have slight variances in my prescription.
So here’s one for all those women who practice optometry!
Girls Can’t Be Mechanics
When our van started making horrible noises on our vacation last year, we pulled off the interstate and into an automotive shop in a small town in Wyoming. My husband went inside to find a mechanic and returned with a young woman, tools in hand, who expertly popped open the hood and began to poke around to see what was wrong. My kids were in the backseat at the time and they both looked up and said “Hey mom - look - it’s a girl mechanic. You should add that one to your shop.” Say no more.
Girls Can’t Sky Dive
Sky Diving is something I would probably try if given the opportunity. It’s not for everyone, but it sure looks like fun! And it’s not just for boys. In fact, there is an all-female skydiving team called Misty Blues, who was featured on Girls Can’t WHAT? back in 2006. The sky diving design has been on my list for quite some time. It was not the easiest thing to create since the parachute is so big, but it has finally made it’s way to the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop.
Girls Can’t Be Truck Drivers
My grandpa was a manager for Yellow Freight trucking and I recall spending an occasional Saturday visiting the terminal when grandpa got called in to handle some unexpected business. I got to sit at his desk and sometimes he’d let me use the CB radio and pretend to be the dispatcher. Check out the photo (click to enlarge it) of me in his Yellow Freight trucker’s hat and with a big button pinned to my shirt that read “I like trucks”. So it is no surprise to find this written in my memory book:

Yup, that’s what I wanted to be in the second grade. On all the other years I listed multiple careers, but in the second grade I was apparently focused on driving a semi. I was so into trucking that many of my childhood photos show me in a Trucker’s cap and I knew the meaning to this saying which hung on my grandpa’s wall:
“Seville, der day go. Tousin buses innarow.
Nojo, demstrux, summit cowsin summit dux.”
So to honor my trucking history, I created the Girls Can’t WHAT? trucking design in the colors of the Yellow Freight company, with the Girls Can’t WHAT? initials on the side of the trailer.
Girls Can’t Play Tennis
Growing up I adored the game of tennis. We had no local organizations so I did my best to persuade friends to indulge me in a set or two and occasionally I could talk my mom or dad into riding our bikes down to the park to bat the ball around. During the late eighties and early nineties, I don’t think I missed a single match of Wimbledon. I had a poster of Chris Evert on my bedroom wall and I knew the strengths and weaknesses of most of the women’s tennis players of that era.
We have Billy Jean King, Monica Seles, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati, Venus and Serena Williams among many others to thank for bringing women’s tennis to the level it is today. The Girls Can’t WHAT? Tennis design was created to honor their perseverance in this amazing sport.
I would love to hear your feedback and experiences with the game of tennis. What challenges have you faced and what did you do to rise above them? Please feel free to post your stories and share your experiences in the comments below or join us in the Girl Talk forums.
Girls Can’t Wrestle
Wrestling is not a sport I know much about. It’s been a popular design request here lately so I bumped it to the top of my list. ![]()
I attempted to Google up some good women’s wrestling resources to go along with this article and it was honestly a bit more challenging than I’d hoped. Seems trying to find info on “women’s wrestling” or “girls wrestling” can lead you to some…um…interesting sites to say the least. It’s too bad some people have to pervert a perfectly healthy sport like this, but sadly that’s the culture we live in.
That aside, I did locate some safe sites for women’s wrestling information: Read more
Girls Can’t Be Divers
Today is my niece Allison’s birthday. Allison has been one of my biggest fans since I started this site, but there was always one design missing from the mix and Alli has reminded me of that on several occasions.
Alli has a fascination with sharks. I’m not sure when it started, but it has been going strong for several years. She’s seen every Discovery channel episode of “shark week” and family vacations have been planned around visits to aquariums and shark feedings, which Allison has participated in. We her family have just accepted that it’s not a phase for her and that someday Allison will have a career that involves sharks in some fashion or another.
One of Allison’s biggest goals is to get to swim with sharks. I’m not sure I’m all on board with doing that, but I can understand her desire to do some snorkeling and visiting the underwater creatures that we don’t have here in the land-locked state of Illinois. So to honor Alli’s 9th birthday, I created the Girls Can’t WHAT? diver design, complete with a shark swimming nonchalantly through the waters.
Girls Can’t Play the Flute
As I promised a while back, I am planning on adding several more musicians to the mix of Girl’s Can’t WHAT? designs. In fact, once I get the keyboard player finished I’m going to do a “girl band” design as well.
The flute player was high on my list of instrumentalists to draw, so here she is:
Since my best friend Kelli plays the flute, I drafted this one using her favorite color (RED) and then sent her a copy to make sure the flute looked ok. Flute is one instrument I don’t know how to play, so I relied on her expertise to make sure it looked ok. How’d I do? Read more
Make a Girls Can’t WHAT?™ Design Request for 2008
Reviewing orders for 2007, I can attest that every single design has been sold in one form or another, with the most popular being the Police Officer, the CSI Detective, Hunter, Martial Artist, Drummer. Orders have quadrupled since December of last year and continue to rise every single month! I can’t thank you enough or supporting Girls Can’t WHAT?™ You’re not just buying a t-shirt for someone, you’re encouraging her dream by showing your support of her hobby, sport or career.
I’ve been working hard this week on clearing my project list so that I can actually take a holiday without anything hanging over my head but the mistletoe. This morning I opted to do a little preliminary planning for 2008. One of my goals for this coming year is to continue to crank out new Girls Can’t WHAT?™ designs as often as possible. I’m shooting for once a week minus some vacation time and the occasional glitch, so roughly another 45 or so characters will be added, but I’d like your help in determining which ones I will have the pleasure of creating this year.

Girls Can’t Ride Bulls
As the topic of girls riding bulls grew hotter and hotter, I decided to buckle down and get this design done. Just in time for Christmas, too, if you order within the next couple of days!
Mac Miller was the first girl I interviewed that sparked interest on the topic of girls bull riding. Since then, bull riding for women has continued to be one of the most popular topics here. The Bull Rider design is now available in the Girls Can’t WHAT?™ shop. It comes on tote bags, hoodies, t-shirts, stickers, magnets, posters and more.
Open the gate and bring it on! Who says cowgirls can’t ride bulls? Show ‘em you can rope and ride with the Girls Can’t WHAT?™ Bull Rider. Eight seconds? No problem. Rodeo Queens can ride, too, and that’s no bull.
Girls Can’t Be Helicopter Pilots
A special request came in a couple weeks ago for a helicopter pilot design and I thought it would be a fantastic addition to the shop. What do you think?
Girls Can’t WHAT? 2008 Calendars are Here
Just in time for Christmas! The Girls Can’t WHAT? Calendars make great gifts for friends, family members and employees. Everone needs a calendar, right?
Four-wheeling Anyone?
This is another “by request” design, but I’m not sure what to call it. It’s a girl on a four-wheeler, but is there a technical name for this sport? Is it a sport? I know a lot of women who like to ride ATV’s through mud and rough terrain, but I’m not sure if there are any competitions involving the vehicles or if this is just something you do for fun. Please post a comment and enlighten me. ![]()
Anyway, the Four-Wheeler design is now available on all sorts of T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, posters, stickers, magnets, hats and more in the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop.
Girls Can’t Be Construction Workers
The construction worker design has been on my list for quite sometime now and I keep getting requests for it, so here it is! I was noticing in my research, too, how many construction signs are not gender-neutral. For example, the “Men Working” sign still exists. In fact, last summer I tried to snap a photo of one sitting out on my street because standing just five feet from it was a woman with a jackhammer, drilling into the pavement. Unfortunately we were going by so fast that the photo turned out blurry. On the bright side, I have seen the lovely orange signs with simply the word “Workers” on it. That’s much better. For my design, though, I created my own sign. ![]()
This design has been added to the Girls Can’t WHAT? Shop. It’s available on T-shirts, tank tops, sweatshirts, hoodies, hats and more. Check ‘em out!
New Marching Band Design
Having spent the better part of my high school and college years in field formations and braving the extreme heat and freezing temperatures known to musicians as “Marching Band Season,” I was particularly excited when someone asked me to create a custom Marching Band design for the girls at her daughter’s school. I tweaked their version into a more generic representation and have posted it in the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop. The hoodies and sweatshirts would make great Christmas gifts and would fit snugly under a uniform to keep the chill off during those final football games. For summer parade days when no marching band uniform is required, check out the tank tops and tees. ![]()
Girls Can’t Be Football Referees
Ok, I debuted a new referee design last week, but I had several people inform me that my design was more of a basketball referee than a football referee. After having the uniform differences pointed out to me (thanks, Clay), I revised it a little and have now added the football referee design to the Girls Can’t WHAT? Shop.
And yes, Sarah Thomas will still be getting a freebie. ![]()
National Talk Like A Pirate Day
Today is National “Talk Like A Pirate” Day. If ye think I’m joking, take a look at the official web site. We’re all prepared here at Girls Can’t WHAT? because we know girls can be pirates, too. In fact, some of the most ferocious pirates in history were female. I don’t make this stuff up. Arrrrg.
Special thanks to Amy Stephen at opensourcecommunity.org for the reminder. ![]()
Girls Can’t Be Referees
Last Saturday, Sarah Thomas became the first woman referee in recorded history to ever to call the plays in a major college football game. Her day job is a pharmaceutical saleswoman and she has 11 years experience at officiating high school football games.
The conference’s coordinator of officials, Gerry Austin, had this to say about Sarah:
“She came highly recommended by two NFL scouts. She has a good presence and demeanor. I feel like she has the ability and courage to make a call, and the guts to not make one, too.
I think it’s like any other time you are the first one, if she does a good job, I think she will have a very positive effect. If she messes up, some people might say females aren’t ready.”
Ironically, the day before I heard about Sarah’s debut on the college football field, I was drafting a Girls Can’t WHAT? referee design. I finished it up this morning and I’m pleased to announce it’s availability in the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop.
If anyone can get me in touch with Sarah Thomas, I’d like to send her one. ![]()
Bump, Set, Spike!
After about a zillion requests, I finally buckled down and drew a Girls Can’t WHAT? volleyball design. This has got to be THE most requested design I have had so far, so I hope it meets expectations. The volleyball player comes in red, green and blue uniforms but I can easily create a custom uniform color or add a team name to the back of the shirt. Just contact me and tell me what you need. No extra charge. This design is now available in the Girls Can’t WHAT? Shop.
I’d like to share some interesting thoughts I had while working on the volleyball player. The “Girls Can’t Play Football” thread has continued to draw a crowd and there is a raging debate over whether girl should play on boy teams just because there aren’t any girls football teams. I was thinking that volleyball is kind of the reverse of that. There aren’t very many (if any) boys volleyball teams at the high school level. So what if a guy wants to play volleyball? We should let him play, right? How is that any different than denying a girl the opportunity to play football when there are no girl teams available?
And another random thought…why is volleyball considered a “girl sport” anyway? *shrug*
Girls Can’t Be X-ray Technicians
I have just finished another custom design - an X-ray Technician - requested by Tarah (by the way Tarah, your email is bouncing, please contact me again about your other request). I’ve had so many requests for medical characters…doctors, nurses, emts, surgeons, etc. that perhaps they need their own category now. Hmm… Anyway, the X-Ray Technician has been added to the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop on the usual items…hoodies, t-shirts, hats, mugs, stickers, tote bags and the increasingly popular pillow. Visit the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop to see the full listing of products.
Girls Can’t Shoot
I just finished this design as a request and can’t resist the opportunity to show it off… Something about girls with guns is very popular. I sell a LOT of police officer and hunter designs. The Sharpshooter design is now available in the Girls Can’t WHAT? Shop.
And this post just wouldn’t be complete without a quote from the most famous female sharpshooter of them all:
keep looking »“Aim at a high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, not the second time and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting for only practice will make you perfect. Finally you’ll hit the bull’s-eye of success.” ~ Annie Oakley
