Summer Reading Ideas
My family is getting ready to head off for our annual summer vacation. This means several hours of driving, which translates into good solid stretches of reading time for me! I’m already planning to dive into Echoes from Auschwitz, but I’m looking for suggestions for what else to take with me. Typically I prefer self-help, psychology and other works of non-fiction, but I will take recommendations for novels, magazines or even something I can read from my iPhone. Here are some book titles I am considering:
- Women Who Dare series
- And the Shofar Blew by Francine Rivers
- Mosaic by Amy Grant (never quite finished it)
- Wanting to Be Her: Body Image Secrets Victoria Won’t Tell You by Michelle Graham
- If I’d Known Then: Women in Their 20s and 30s Write Letters to Their Younger Selves (I have yet to read all the stories)
What do you suggest?
Meet Holocaust Survivor Eva Kor
Yesterday I met an absolutely amazing woman by the name of Eva Kor. Eva is a survivor. At the age of 10, Eva and her twin sister Miriam were sent to Auschwitz and subjected to medical experimentation by Dr. Josef Mengele. They remained in the Nazi death camp for about 9 months before being rescued from the sub-human and torturous conditions.
I was able to hear Eva speak yesterday in an interview format with a video presentation behind her on the big screen. The pictures were difficult to watch and her story was equally gruesome. I expected that, tho.
What I didn’t expect to find was… Read more
Book Review: If I’d Known Then
Ya know, I have the greatest job in the world. Seriously. I get to work at home with iTunes blaring through my speakers, windows open, no shoes and I get to sit and draw cartoons, write and build web sites all day long. EVERY DAY! And if that is not awesome enough, I get 2-3 deliveries a week from UPS and FedEx with the best gifts ever - books! People send me books to review non-stop and I love it. Especially when I receive real treasures like this one:
If I’d Known Then: Women in Their 20s and 30s Write Letters to Their Younger Selves (edited by Ellyn Spragins) is a fantastic collection of letters from some astonishing women who describe themselves as they were in their youth and offer advice and encouragement. I wasn’t sure at first if I would like this type of book or not. I don’t like novels and personal stuff, I much prefer self-help and psychology as my standard reading material. As fate would have it, I flipped it open to page 49 where I find fellow geek Catarina Fake (cofounder of Flickr) recounting her kindergarten troubles and I could immediately relate!
Catarina goes on to tell her rebellious child:
A New Book Quest
I discovered another book I want to get my hands on soon for a review. It’s titled Wanting to Be Her: Body Image Secrets Victoria Won’t Tell You by author Michelle Graham. Love the title! Here’s an excerpt:
“We are convinced that the only way to find contentment and happiness is to permanently change the parts of our bodies that upset us. It becomes so important to us that we are willing to spend thousand of dollars on a solution that doesn’t address the underlying issue.”
Anyone read this one yet?
A Return To Modesty
Modesty seems to be a hot topic on this site. Go figure. I don’t get the bare-it-all mentality, the skimpy clothing or the fashion industry. What’s wrong with a good pair of jeans and a t-shirt these days? Sheesh. Raising two young and very impressionable daughters, modesty is a daily topic in our house whether it is over two-piece bathing suits or wearing tank tops in below zero weather because it’s “cool”. But modesty goes way beyond what we choose to wear. Read more
