Beatrice Potter Was Told She Couldn’t Write A Book

Beatrice PotterAs an artist, I absolutely love this post over at Bitch Magazine about Beatrice Potter. I have always been a fan of her creativity, but never knew much about her background.

  • Her parents made her be the housekeeper, since educating women was not a priority
  • She kept her drawings hidden from her parents, who disapproved of her art
  • Refused admittance into schools because she was female
  • Had to self-publish her first Peter Rabbit book because it was rejected by all publishers

I’m betting if she were alive today she would be sporting a Girls Can’t WHAT? Artist T-shirt for sure.

Read through the complete article and see if you can’t relate to her on some level.  She was truly an amazing woman who never let society’s view on women stop her from pursuing a dream.

This was news to me too. I’ve been trying to dig through the library and other resources to find more stories like hers. I’ll share them as I find them.

We may not have equality across the board yet, but sometimes I think we have it way easier than they did!

  • Wow, I never knew this! I love her stories and can’t imagine the world with out them… just goes to show that women shouldn’t listen to people who tell them they can’t do something. We CAN do it! :)
