Hmmm. Well, if being a feminist means that I believe in equal rights for women, then OF COURSE I am a feminist. However, if it is interpreted as believing that women are somehow superior, that men are nothing more than pigs, or that MY rights somehow trump the rights of those most vulnerable, then no, I am not a feminist.
I am not militant about being a feminist…or as the oft-hated Rush Limbaugh calls them…”feminazis.” There is a difference, I think, between a woman who is a feminist and one who could be classified as some sort of “feminazi.”
The typical view today of what a feminist is include: being pro-choice, being anti-male, being a liberal democrat, and so forth.
I don’t agree with that view of what a feminist is, however. It’s hard to say what one really IS anymore, since the media has put so much spin on it, from my perspective.
Now I’m rambling.
I’ll stop.
Are you talkin to me? Now you have read my blog what do you think?
According to the definition at the end of the video clip which reads “Feminism: Belief in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes and the movement organized around this belief.” I think we can all say we are feminists. Does any woman believe she does not deserve to be treated equally? Wouldn’t that make EVERY woman a feminist?
Hmmm. I dunno, G. There are some women who actually do NOT think they deserve to be treated equally. But that’s usually because they’ve been beaten down to the point where they live in constant fear.
Recently, I got into a discussion about an inappropriate term (in my opinion) which was used by a man to refer to women. He called them the “b” word. Surprisingly, the women whom I knew to be very vocal “feminists” had no objections to this term being used by him, and I was in the minority of those who said “perhaps a better, less demeaning term could be used.”
I was stunned, to say the least.
Of course, someone made the point that we could use an equally abrasive term for MEN and see how that goes over.
LOL!
Gretchen, I wouldn’t really like to catagorize myself into feminism, which men see wrong, but that is the correct definition, so I guess I’m a feminist.
