The Amazing Cindy Blackman

I remember the first time I saw drummer Cindy Blackman play. My husband and I were watching some late night talk show and Lenny Kravitz’s band was the featured music for the show. I recall jumping up and pointing at the screen saying “is that a…is that a… is that a… a… a… a GIRL playing drums?”

It may have even been the first time I had ever seen a woman play and I was just shocked. Not shocked by the fact that she was a woman, but by the fact that she was better than any guy I have ever heard before! I had already been loving the groove before the camera even gave me a shot of her playing. I was immediately hooked, and Cindy Blackman has been one of my favorite drummers ever since. She is just phenomenal to watch! Check out her chops:

    WOW! That first clip blew me away! Like jazz fusion or something…and she ROCKED it!!! My hat’s off to Cindy. Anyone…man OR woman, who can play like that, is a talented individual. :)

    I saw Cindy perform @ a Leeny Kravitz concert several years ago. She is, simply put, freaking amazing live. So was the whole concert one of the best I’ve seen (& I’ve been to a lotta concerts).

    Cathy - you are so lucky. If she ever plays anywhere within reasonable driving distance from me, I will SO be there! b-)
