Rev It Up!

Racecar Driver DesignOne of the most famous female racecar drivers, Danica Patrick once said “My goal is not to be the first female to do things or to be a poster child or a calendar girl. It’s to just win, because everything takes care of itself if you win.” That is a fantastic quote! Just get out there and show them what you can do. Let your talent and abilities speak for themselves.

I’m just hoping that Danica will continue to bring a positive light to women and driving. Then perhaps maybe someday instead of a guy screaming “woman driver” when I cut him off, he will smile and say “wow - way to cut that corner!” It could happen… :-?

Anyway…the latest Girls Can’t WHAT? design is for all you racefans out there. This design features a female driver suited up, holding her helmet and ready to race. Her cherry red Formula F1 car is behind her in the background. This is just one design in a series of racing designs which will eventually include stock cars, NASCAR, drag racers and other vehicles. Check out the Racecar Design in the Girls Can’t WHAT? Shop today.

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten

Posted by: gretchen on January 31, 2007 | 3 Comments |

Every once in a while my kids will get a song stuck in their heads and drive me nuts by singing it at the top of their lungs every chance they get. Normally I find this highly obnoxious, but this week’s tune is “Unwritten”by Natasha Bedingfield and I kind of like it. Ok, I really like it - a lot. I think they picked it up off a Barbie CD or one of the kid-friendly web sites I allow them to visit. Unwritten has been circulating the airwaves for a while now, but I’ve heard it on the radio quite a bit more here lately. The lyrics to this song are very cool and the song is really catchy. I would definitely add this to my “inspirational song” list. I especially like the lines “I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines/We’ve been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can’t live that way.

Settlin’ By Sugarland

Posted by: gretchen on January 30, 2007 | 2 Comments |

Jennifer Nettles rocks! One half of the dynamic Sugarland duo, Jennifer’s vocals are incredible. I have been following this band for quite some time and they just get better and better. Many of their tunes are inspirational and their latest called “Settlin’” is no exception. My favorite line is “Yeah, you know I will/Find what it means to be the girl/Who changed her mind/And changed the world.” The song is about relationships, but that one line in the chorus is so powerful. I love it!

The Amazing Cindy Blackman

Posted by: gretchen on January 30, 2007 | 4 Comments |

I remember the first time I saw drummer Cindy Blackman play. My husband and I were watching some late night talk show and Lenny Kravitz’s band was the featured music for the show. I recall jumping up and pointing at the screen saying “is that a…is that a… is that a… a… a… a GIRL playing drums?”

Unique Does Not Describe You

Posted by: gretchen on January 30, 2007 | 14 Comments |

The word “unique” appears to be overused these days. I hear it all the time in the media and I read it at least 10 times a day. Marketers use it frequently in commercials, print media and the Internet. In fact, I’m listening to the radio right now and there is a commercial playing for a sports bar that offers a “unique” menu.  Even I am guilty of using it on my website and in my shop.  Surely we can do better than that.  8-|

Meet Female Bullrider Mac Miller

Posted by: gretchen on January 29, 2007 | 39 Comments |

Mac Miller PhotoBy random chance, I met 14-year-old Mackenzie Miller from Denton, Montana through MySpace. Preferring to be called Mac, she explained to me that she loved the Girls Can’t WHAT? web site and that it especially interested her because she was into bullriding and there just aren’t a lot of girls who do that sort of thing. Wanting to know more about her experience in this field, I asked Mac for an interview and she accepted.

How Geeky Are You?

Posted by: gretchen on January 28, 2007 | 15 Comments |

Amy Stephen mentioned this quiz in her blog and I thought it would be a good one to post here, especially since the statistics at the end say “The average score for the gals is 38, while the guy average is 56.” I think we lady-geeks need to get on the ball and raise our average. I did my part to bump up the score:

Cool Web Site: LadyStar

Posted by: gretchen on January 26, 2007 | 3 Comments |

LadyStar CharactersI had a really cool site recommended to me last week: LadyStar is the epic story of seven girls who discover the mighty artifacts of a betrayed kingdom and its fearsome legends of an avenging champion. I should mention here that these very smart, capable girls who use their brain power and talents to battle evil. The site is updated many times each week with free chapters from the Ajan Warriors Series, plus games, contests and all sorts of fun special events.

Being a mom to two girls who LOVE to read and play on the computer, I have spent considerable time visting LadyStar and checking it out. The storylines are highly engaging and the illustrations are just beautiful. The artwork alone is worth a peek. Love it! At this time, two books have been written and a third is currently in development. Fans of LadyStar can also find favorite characters on the LadyStar apparel and gift items in their online shop. I have added this site to the “mommy approved” bookmarks on my girls’ computer.

New Fishing Design Released

Posted by: gretchen on January 25, 2007 | 4 Comments |

Fishing DesignMen and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths. ~Author Unknown

Grab your rod and reel, tackle box, favorite hat and head out to the lake to catch the big one! Who says girls can’t fish? I love to go fishing and I’m not afraid to touch the worms or the fish. And yes, I bait my own hook and take the fish off! I would probably filet them too, but we usually just do the “catch and release” thing.

Apparently a LOT of you like to go fishing because I have received a ton of requests for this design. So here she is…check her out in the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop. And since so many of you seem to know the difference between a bluegill and catfish, I’m betting you have some pretty fishy stories to tell, too. Perhaps I can “lure” you into sharing them with us. :)

I just returned from the school spelling bee, where my daughter Katelynn was competing for the first time. A fourth grader attending her first year of public school, Katelynn is an exceptional speller. Her teacher told me that out of all the spelling tests they have had this year, Katelynn has only missed a total of about 6 words.

Are You A Heart Monger?

Posted by: gretchen on January 23, 2007 | 5 Comments |

Heart LogoI love this band. Ann and Nancy Wilson have been solid players in the music business since the early 70’s and they are still smokin’ hot! Both women are multi-talented musical powerhouses. Nancy plays guitar, mandolin, keyboards, harmonica as well as singing vocals. Ann sings lead, but also plays flute, guitar, bass, autoharp and keyboards. Heart is just the essence of chick rock. Not convinced? Watch this clip of Heart with Gretchen Wilson:

Sexism in Gaming

Posted by: gretchen on January 22, 2007 | 2 Comments |

Pac-Man GameI’m a little bit new to the gaming world, having just purchased a PlayStation 2 for our kids this Christmas. Prior to that my experience with gaming systems included a Sega Genesis and if I really want to date myself I would mention Atari, although my famliy never owned one.

I did have one of these midway Pac-man machines, tho, and I am pretty sure that my determination to beat that machine is the reason I have to wear contacts or glasses at all times. Sexism in gaming back then was pretty much non-existant, at least on the games I played. Things seemed pretty fair - I mean there was Pac-Man and then there was Ms. Pac-Man - both with equal chomping abilities. Nowadays the video gaming industry has exploded and so has the gender stereotyping.

Golf Caddy?

Posted by: gretchen on January 22, 2007 | 3 Comments |

Golfer DesignGolfchick blogger, Kristen, posted an excellent comment in Are we Here to Golf, Gentleman? over the weekend. She brings to our attention the portrayal of women as golf caddies. Kristen explains that there is an industry out there that allows men to pick a local female caddy based on a photo and a profile. Each woman has a price attached and there is some kind of rating system involved. Apparently there are no male caddies available. Go figure! In my opinion, this is completely degrading to women. It is taking a lot of restraint for me not to find that site and hack them good…maybe wipe out the site and post a giant image of the Girls Can’t WHAT? golfer girl. Uh…not that I do that sort of thing (anymore)… ;)
Kristen goes more into detail in her comment. Thanks for the heads up Kristen, I will probably post more on this topic soon.

How NOT to Pass an American Idol Audition

Posted by: gretchen on January 19, 2007 | 28 Comments |

American Idol LogoI am a huge American Idol fan, probably because I am such a music buff. It is a fascinating process to me since I have been on both ends of the spectrum. As a musician, I have been through countless auditions and after graduating with a degree in Music Business, I worked at a radio station where I was constantly exposed to trends in new music. I was also asked to judge talent competitions many times on various local and professional levels. I say all that to add a little credibility to what I am about say about American Idol, but in fact, the following is just plain common sense in my opinion.

Girls Can’t Be Programmers

Posted by: sam on January 18, 2007 | 16 Comments |

Hello,
I am being told almost every single day at the university that girls shouldnt be programmers. They can’t do it. They dont have what it takes. and then they say, that I am one of the “rare kind” that doesnt count. It bothers me and it bothers me A LOT to be in a classroom that the teacher praises the guys in and if a some girls make a mistake, its a joke. I have spoken to several staff members but nothing has solved the problem. The thing is, it is true what the teachers say, in my country the girls just want to graduate and thats it. So, they sign up their classes with easy going professors and they do succeed.

I signed up my classes with the tougher teachers and I am emotionaly suffering with their attitude towards women programmers. Several have told me that they would rather teach a class full of boys then have some girls in their. I know they dont mean me, but it still bothers me and I would like to do something about it. I am popular among staff and a board member at a programming club (the only girl, the rest are guys) and I can start something at the university, I just need help in starting something good. Something that will change the girls and will also change the teachers’ attitude towards them.
Thank you.

Sam

Computer GeekIf you are reading this message, then this site has officially switched gears. I am in the process of rolling out updates to Girls Can’t WHAT? that will kick things up a notch. Or two…or three… My goal for this site has always been to form a community for women, so I will take every opportunity I have to move towards that goal. The changes I am implementing will foster a more open and diverse community. It will also allow visitors to post comments without registering, which will encourage more discussion from visitors. It will allow for a more open environment where people can participate as little or as much as they want.

Who Is The Doctor?

Posted by: gretchen on January 10, 2007 | 5 Comments |

I am reading a fascinating new book called “Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking” by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s mainly about intuition and the first few thoughts that go through your head in various situations. What I find interesting is that in some situations your gut-reaction is your best bet, but in others you are better off going with logic and fact. The trick is learning to discern the difference and deciding when your intuition is leading you to the right answer. There is a really cool riddle in the book that I will admit had me stumped at first, but then I figured it out. I thought I’d post it here and I will even offer a free Girls Can’t WHAT? shirt to the first person to solve it. I won’t tell you whether you should use intuition or logic. Here it is:
