Anousheh Ansari Quotes

“I hope to inspire everyone—especially young people, women, and young girls all over the world, and in Middle Eastern countries that do not provide women with the same opportunities as men—to not give up their dreams and to pursue them…It may seem impossible to them at times. But I believe they can realize their dreams if they keep it in their hearts, nurture it, and look for opportunities and make those opportunities happen.”

For Women Only: What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of MenAuthor: Shaunti Feldhahn

Published: 2004

What’s going on in a man’s mind? From their early days, every woman has struggled to understand why males behave the way they do. Even long-married women who think they understand men have only scratched the surface. Beneath a man’s rugged exterior is an even more rugged, unmapped terrain. What bestselling author Shaunti Feldhahn’s research reveals about the inner lives of men will open women’s eyes to what the men in their life - boyfriends, brothers, husbands, and sons - are really thinking and feeling. Men want to be understood, but they’re afraid to “freak out” the women they love by confessing what is happening inside their heads. This book will guide women in how to provide the loving support that modern men want and need.

Brandi Chastain: Not Just One of the Boys (Robbie Readers)Author: Michelle Medlock Adams

Published: 2005

Some would argue that Brandi Chastain single-handedly made women’s soccer popular. Few people knew much about the best female soccer players in the world until after the 1999 Women’s World Cup finals. That’s when Brandi scored a goal on a penalty kick after the second overtime of the U.S. versus China match and struck her famous pose. She was photographed on her knees, mouth wide open, eyes closed, fists in the air, wearing a black sports bra, and white soccer shorts. Her celebration pose was featured on magazines and newspapers around the world. After that, Brandi became a household name. People knew her for her sports bra, but she’s much more than that. She is a devoted wife, a step-mom, a college graduate, an author, a philanthropist, and more. In this book you can discover how Brandi became the fabulous athlete and wonderful lady she is today.

Obsessive Genius: The Inner World of Marie Curie / Barbara Goldsmith (Book)

Obsessive Genius: The Inner World of Marie Curie (Great Discoveries) (Great Discoveries)Author: Barbara Goldsmith

Published: 2004

The myth of Marie Curie—the penniless Polish immigrant who, through genius and obsessive persistence, endured years of toil and deprivation to produce radium, a luminous panacea for all the world’s ills including cancer—has obscured the remarkable truth behind her discoveries. Curie’s shrewd though controversial insight was that radioactivity was an atomic property that could be used to discover new elements. While her work won her two Nobel Prizes and transformed our world, it did not liberate her from the prejudices of either the male-dominated scientific community or society. Here is an
all-too-human woman trying to balance science, love, and the family values that constitute her legacy.

Using original research (diaries, letters, and family interviews) to peel away the layers of myth and reveal the woman behind the icon, the acclaimed author and historian Barbara Goldsmith offers a dazzling portrait of Curie, her amazing discoveries, and the price she paid for fame. 15 photographs.

It\'s Not About the Bra: Play Hard, Play Fair, and Put the Fun Back Into Competitive SportsAuthor: Brandi Chastain

Published: 2004

When Brandi Chastain famously stripped off her jersey to celebrate her World Cup-winning penalty kick, the gesture represented not only the essence of athletic triumph but the joy of a competitor who knows how to play hard and still have fun. Now, in It’s Not About the Bra, Chastain steps out from behind her iconic image to deliver an important wake-up call to competitive youth sports, which has gone increasingly out of control.

Album: I Hope You Dance (2000)

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

You Can’t Un-Neuter A Dog

Quest's PhotoHonestly, some folks just don’t think logically. Maybe I notice it more because I am a very logical person, but lately I am starting to think plain old common sense is a gift that only a few of us have embraced.

I went downtown to the city building yesterday to pay for the annual registration of my dog. We have to do this every year to prove that our pets have all their proper vaccinations. So I showed up at the registrar window with my paperwork from the vet and my check already made out to the city.

Have A Nice Day

Apparently, I have this gift. Trouble follows me everywhere. I get kicked out of more places than I can count.

I stopped by a small mom & pop jewelry store today to see if I could get my Palm T3 repaired. It has lost three screws on the slider and the one screw that is left isn’t able to keep the palm’s techno guts from spilling out every time I open it. If I don’t get it fixed, it will probably die of over exposure to elements known as pocket lint.

Mean What You Say

Keep Out DrawingAs I returned from fetching the mail yesterday afternoon, I came across this lovely view on our front step so I snapped a photo. My daughter, Katelynn, had drawn a beautiful bouquet of flowers in a pastel rainbow of chalk with the words “Keep Out” embossed in the center. The irony was immediately apparent. The message to “keep out” was clear, but the presentation was all too warm and inviting.

As I reviewed the picture on my camera screen, I thought “what a girly thing to do”. I don’t mean the pretty colors and the cute little flowers and stars. Yes, the artwork may appear feminine, but I am referring to the mixed message it brings. Isn’t that what we girls are prone to do? Say one thing but send signals that say the opposite? Why do we fall prey to such bewildering etiquette?

The next Rule of Engagement for the Girls Can’t WHAT? Revolution is to “Be Nice”. I know it sounds simple and a little redundant considering that we just covered “Be Respectful,” but being nice and being respectful are two very different things. You can be nice and not be respectful and you can also be respectful and not be nice.

Know Your Voice

Posted by: gretchen on September 11, 2006 | 4 Comments |

A true Revolutionary must know where her voice lies. There are many ways for women to express themselves, but in general we all fall into either Speakers or Writers. In order to be an effective Revolutionary, a woman must know which voice is her strength. This next addition to the Girls Can’t WHAT? Revolution Guidebook is called “Know Your Voice”.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony are excellent examples of Revolutionaries who knew their voice. This nearly inseparable duo led the Women’s Movement in America in the 1800’s and without them and their faithful supporters, American women probably still wouldn’t have the right to vote. They fought long and hard on every women’s issue imaginable. If you really want a taste of what they accomplished, I highly recommend watching “Not For Ourselves Alone”. It is one of the most amazing documentaries I have ever seen. Much of their success can be attributed to being aware of their gifts and talents.

Why We Don’t Want Men To Vote (Parody)

This is a parody penned by Alice Duer Miller in 1915. It was most likely written in response to arguments that women didn’t really want to vote and probably weren’t qualified to exercise the vote if they were authorized:

ElastigirlHelen Parr (superhero name Mrs. Incredible, formerly Elastigirl) is a fictional character created by director Brad Bird for the 2004 animated film The Incredibles produced by Pixar. She is the wife of Mr. Incredible, also known as Bob Parr. The character’s voice is provided by actress Holly Hunter. She is referred to as Mrs. Incredible on the tie-in merchandise for the film and at one point in the film itself (almost), presumably due to the existence of DC Comics’ Elasti-Girl character, whose alterego, coincidentally or not, is named Rita Farr.
