I thought I would share the interview with you ladies, so here it is…

Are We Here To Golf, Gentleman?

Posted by: gretchen on July 28, 2006 | 7 Comments |

Golfer DesignWhen I develop a new Girls Can’t WHAT? design, I usually do a little research first. Especially if I am unfamiliar with the activity. I spent the earlier part of this week researching golf and looking at various pictures to determine the best way to represent a girl

As I googled the phrase “women playing golf,” I came across a few very interesting posts in a sports forum that was frequented mostly by guys who like to tee off in their free time. I absolutely refuse to post a link to it here because, frankly, I don’t want to give that forum any publicity. Why? Because what I read was absolutely stunning! Ladies, I hope this isn’t an indication of what guys are plotting behind our backs… Read more

You are NOT stupid!

Posted by: gretchen on July 21, 2006 | 4 Comments |

Have you ever uttered the words “I’m stupid?” Or replied to an email and typed “I’m such an idiot”? Or how about those T-shirts with the arrow that say “I’m with stupid.” I can’t stand those. If you have one, burn it immediately! What is the point of such a phrase? It serves only to degrade the person to whom it is directed.

I never really cared about little phrases like this until my kids started to use them. Now suddenly it’s like someone has smacked me upside the head every time I hear the word “stupid” come out of their mouths. I think it would be easier to deal with if they were actually spewing profanity, but they are using words that they hear everyday. Here is an example of “every day” infiltration of the word “stupid” at my house…

Meet Jennifer Marriott

Jennifer Marriott PhotoI’d like to introduce you all to a friend I made recently…I met Jennifer Marriott in the Joomla forums a few weeks ago. In case you don’t know what “Joomla” is, it is incredible open source CMS software that Jennifer and I both used to create our web sites. Aside from being a fellow web geek, Jennifer is also a very talented musician. I did not know this until she asked me to take a look at her new site design about two weeks ago. Her site can be found at www.jennifermarriott.com and she did it herself! I really like the site design because it is simple and clean looking with subtle color accents. I was impressed with the home page, and being a musician myself, I decided to surf around the rest of the site to check out her music.

The “Right” Time of the Month To Race

Danica Patrick Cover PhotoI don’t usually read the newspaper, but I happened to be at a McDonald’s today for my nephew’s first birthday party and as I was getting my ketchup I happened to glance over at the newspaper which was open to the sports section. There was a photo of Danica Patrick in the side column and the title of the article caught my attention. It read “IRL driver disses Danica”.Now, if you don’t know who Danica Patrick is, I suggest you read up on her. She is an incredibly talented racecar driver and recently led the Indy 500 pack for a few laps. Danica has been making the headlines lately because she has been considering busting up the NASCAR boys club by becoming the first female to race on the NASCAR circuit.

Cult of Power: Sex Discrimination in Corporate America and What Can Be Done About It / Martha (Book)

Posted by: gretchen on July 13, 2006 | Leave a Comment |

In 2002, Martha  Burk, chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations, led a protest against the Augusta National Golf Clubhome of the Masters golf tournament for its refusal to admit women to the club. In riveting prose, she tells that story and draws out lessons for eliminating sex discrimination in corporations generally. In her initial letter to chairman Hootie Johnson, Burk simply requests that he review the club’s policies and open the membership to women; Johnson’s reply to Burk vilifies her and calls her references to discrimination offensive. As her struggle with the club intensifies, Burk learns that several powerful corporate presidents are members of the club (she includes a complete list of the club’s members) and uncovers countless anecdotes of daily discrimination against women at their companies. She calls for companies to do “gender equity audits” to uncover the real statistics about matters such as the number of layoffs by gender and job category, the number of new hires by gender, including pay averages, and number of new board members by gender. With a terrific story on which to hang her recommendations, Burk achieves a rare hybrid of activism and entertainment.

The True Measure of a Woman: You Are More Than What You See / Lisa Bevere (Book)

A woman often measures herself and her own worth according to the standards set by others around her. Her self-esteem rises and falls with the whims of popular opinion as she allows other people to control how she thinks about herself. This often results in depression and other mental and physical problems.

Bad Girls of the Bible / Liz Curtis Higgs (Book)

Posted by: gretchen on July 12, 2006 | Leave a Comment |

Humorist and popular storyteller Liz Curtis Higgs (Help! I’m Laughing and I Can’t Get Up) takes a look at the vamps and tramps of the Bible, searching for the lessons these wicked women have to teach. She acknowledges that as much as she admires Sarah’s faithfulness and Mary’s innocence, she finds that her own life contains many of the shortcomings of women such as Rahab, Delilah and Lot’s wife. When Higgs begins her study of Jezebel, she notes, “I understood her pushy personality, I empathized with her need for control, I tuned into her angry outbursts…but boy did she teach me what not to do in my marriage.” She places the ten women in her study into four categories. Eve, she says, was the “First Bad Girl,” for badness has to begin somewhere. Potiphar’s wife (who tried to seduce Joseph), Delilah and Jezebel, Higgs says, were “Bad to the Bone”: these women “sinned with gusto from bad beginning to bitter end.” Women who were “Bad for a Moment,” and who have forever been characterized by their “life-changing” mistakes, include Saphhira, Michal and Lot’s wife (who was turned into a pillar of salt for looking back on her homeland against God’s commands). Higgs says that Rahab, the prostitute who helped the Israelites conquer Jericho, the Woman at the Well and the Sinful Woman were “Bad for a Season, but Not Forever”: these women “had plenty of sin in their past, but they were also willing to change and be changed.” Higgs opens each chapter with a fictional retelling of the biblical story and then proceeds to a verse-by-verse exegesis and commentary on the biblical text. Each chapter closes with four lessons to be learned from the life of the bad girl and eight “thoughts worth considering.” Higgs retells these biblical stories with rollicking humor and deep insight as she teaches about the nature of sin and goodness.

Fight Like a Girl: The Power of Being a Woman / Lisa Bevere (Book)

Posted by: gretchen on July 12, 2006 | Leave a Comment |

Lisa Bevere, an evangelical speaker and author known for tackling touchy topics with candor, wit and transparency, lays down the gauntlet again as she calls Christian women to cease trying to emulate men and embrace their feminine, strong nature. Bevere (Kissed the Girls and Made Them Cry) offers women a clear alternative to society’s take on the definition of true strength. Rather than relinquishing the power and influence that she believes women innately embody for the sake of mimicking men’s overt physical strength, women can choose to wield their impact for good by way of subtler, more feminine speech and conduct. Bevere expounds upon the ways women fight best “as caretakers of others’ hearts, by lifting another’s spirit by speaking strength to their weaknesses, and wisely offering images of healthier, life-enhancing practices.” She asserts that enemies often fall before influence rather than brute strength: “A gentle tongue can break a bone” (Prov. 25:15).
Although some women will be put off by the book’s gender-essentialist stance (e.g., women are by nature more tender and more spiritual, etc.), others will resonate with that message. All will appreciate Bevere’s authenticity as she delves deep to unmask long-held misconceptions regarding women’ uniqueness and untapped potential.

Coming Up for Air: Simple Acts to Redefine Your Life / Margaret Becker (Book)

Posted by: gretchen on July 12, 2006 | Leave a Comment |

Dove Award–winning recording artist Margaret Becker intentionally “disconnected” over 10 years ago and has not been the same since. In 1995, Becker a one-month retreat at an oceanside rental, where her only promise to herself was to stop each day to take in both the sunrise and the sunset. Becker, in her usual self-deprecating comedic style, offers simple daily life observances like holy offerings. Somehow, she manages to offer gentle humor and pull at heartstrings, too. Becker aptly conveys what might be the book’s defining statement: “Some things are worth digging for, even if they come up swinging when they are unearthed.” During her stay, she played like a child, taking crayons in hand and making life stories and spiritual benchmarks for the next 30 years, projecting, “I will be earthy and a bit eccentric, but I will be wise.” Becker defines her retreat’s life lessons, then jumps ahead to the present, reflecting without regret on which of those scribblings have come to pass. Women of all ages will feast on Becker’s colorful, earthy spiritual recollections and sit back well-satisfied as they take time to digest her musings.

Little Drummer Girl / Alicia Keys (Lyrics)

Posted by: gretchen on July 10, 2006 | Leave a Comment |

To me it seems like Christmas is lost
‘Cuz it’s not about celebrating anymore
It’s just about giving to receive
And the illest thing to me about the little drummer boy
Or the little drummer girl in my case, I guess
Is that all that Shorty had was her drum, that’s it
And through her drum, she gave Jesus her soul
There ain’t no amount of riches that could ever amount to that
You know what I’m sayin’?

Ba dee ah, ba dee ah
Come on, they told me
A new born king to see
Our finest gifts we bring to lay before the king
So to honor him
When we come

Oh, ra pum pum pum pum
Baby Jesus, I am a poor girl too
I have no gift to bring
That’s fit to give a king
Shall I play for you on my drum?

Mary nodded
The ox and lamb kept time
I played my drum for Him
I played my best for Him
Then he smiled at me, me and my drum
Me and my drum

Rum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum pum (oh yeah)
Pa rum pum pum pum (oh)
Pa rum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum pum (come on they told me)
Pa rum pum pum pum (a new born king to see)
Pa rum pum pum pum (can I play my drum for him)
Pa rum pum pum pum
