Black Girl Magazine

Posted by: gretchen on April 11, 2006 |

Black Girl Magazine - Founded by 14-year old Atlanta resident, Kenya Jordana James in 2002, Blackgirl Magazine and its youthful staff are commited to providing information that not only entertains, but empowers. As the first magazine of its kind, Blackgirl focuses on promoting positive messages and imagery among African American teens, while offering insightful coverage of history, culture, lifestyle, and entertainment news from a unique perspective.

12/20/07 Update:  I do not know how to to reach Kenya or how to get in touch with anyone responsible for publishing this magazine.  If someone has a link or email address for the publisher, please let me know so I can update this page. Thanks.

    Hey Kenya,
I just had to stop by and say hello to an old friend. It’s been a while since I’ve seen or heard from you. The last time we saw each other was at the Malcolm X Festival in Atlanta a few years back. How has life been treating you? I hope all is well. I really want to congratulate you on all of your accomplishments: the magazine, the t-shirt, and your hair products. You’re doing your thing. Keep in touch.

Hey Kenya! It’s been a very long time since we met at the Hammond’s house event. I was getting ready for college, and I believe you were starting your Junior year… well a lot has happened since the! I’ve been in the Air Force over a year now, and I plan on getting married soon… funny how time flies. Well I’m honored to have met you, and if you want to chat again, and get to meet my fiancée (at least vocally) call us at 404-488-8725. Good luck, kid!

    Hi everybody,

I was fortunate enough to have read a copy of Black Girl Magazine about 2years ago, but I have no idea where it went but I found another cool magazine for teens called S.P.E.A.K. Magazine which is also for teens and I have been reading it and I love it!!!!!!!!!! Its written all by teens and I submitted some of my poetry and I was contacted back and my work might be published I am so excited lol! So if Black Girl is no longer a magazine I would suggest everyone to try out S.P.E.A.K. Magazine. Good luck
